Halloween Around The World

Halloween in Mexico

If you think America is the only place where jack-o’-lanterns and scary haunted houses reign supreme in October, think again. Halloween actually originated with the pagans who lived in what today is Ireland, and nowadays the occasion is celebrated around the globe. Here are just a few highlights of international Halloween customs.

Ireland: Where Halloween Began

In Ireland, many adults light bonfires and decorate their homes with carved pumpkins and turnips. Most Irish children trick-or-treat, and adults join kids in dressing up. Irish Halloween costumes tend to be macabre; people look like performers at top-rated haunted houses. At nighttime parties, people of all ages hunt for hidden candy and play “snap-apple.” The object of this game is to sink your teeth into an apple hanging by a string. And in many Irish towns, people enjoy fireworks on Halloween night.

Remembering Lost Souls

In the Roman Catholic Church and some other Christian denominations, the evening of October 31 is All Hallows’ Eve. In other words, it’s the night preceding All Souls’ Day, a day to remember deceased loved ones. Thus, many Halloween traditions call to mind dead family members. Belgians illuminate candles to honor those they've lost. Germans make sure they never leave knives out on Halloween so that the spirits returning to Earth won’t hurt themselves. In Slovakia, people set chairs beside fireplaces on All Hallows’ Eve: one chair for every family member who’s alive and one for every departed relative. Austrians have a more elaborate ritual: They set bread and water upon a table and light a lamp beside it just before going to bed. That way, should spirits return during the night, they’ll have something to eat and drink.

A Holiday Blossoms in France

Oddly enough, the French never really celebrated Halloween until the mid-1990s. At that time, McDonald’s and other multinational corporations started running Halloween-themed advertisements in France. In addition, Disneyland Paris, a theme park that opened in 1992, began holding Halloween parties and parades for children. The French -- hard-pressed to resist any party -- soon took to the holiday enthusiastically.

The French mostly celebrate Halloween by attending parties in homes, restaurants, and nightclubs. Trick-or-treating and scary haunted houses, meanwhile, are uncommon. The trick-or-treating that does occur usually takes place at commercial venues rather than private residences.

Some French citizens still refuse to acknowledge Halloween, however, viewing it as an American affair. So will Halloween continue to thrive in France? Will the nation soon be home to some of the world’s best haunted houses? Or will this observance prove to be merely a passing fad? No one knows for sure.

Halloween the Mexican Way

In Mexico, Halloween is called "El Dia de los Muertos,” which translates to “the days of the dead.” This celebration commences the night of October 31 and extends through November 2. Despite the name of the event, Mexicans do not decorate their homes to resemble the scariest haunted houses. Rather, this holiday is a joyous occasion. That’s because many people believe that their deceased relatives return home on November 2. To welcome them, many Mexicans set up altars at home, altars adorned with photos, candies, flowers, candles, and deceased relatives’ favorite foods and beverages. This annual celebration concludes when people gather at family members’ graves to enjoy picnics and reflect upon happy times spent with their lost loved ones.

What’s more, many Mexican towns stage elaborate parades during El Dia de los Muertos. At these parades, people wearing skeleton costumes dance and others throw flowers and candies into open coffins. Surely you won’t see things like that at any haunted house in Denver.

Austin works for Denver's scariest Haunted House the 13th Door!  I love Halloween it's my favorite time of the year, but when I'm able to pull myself away from visiting a local Haunted House I'm at home with the family.  You can find my on my nerd podcast, "I Am A Super Nerd" as well as Facebook, so don't be shy and swing by for a visit.

Warning: All Hallows Eve Is Near!

Halloween. That one little word inspires the imagination with images of ghosts, goblins, candy, and maybe even a prank or two. What was once a pagan holiday honoring the dead has become a national day for dressing in costume and gorging oneself on candy. And while the malls and supermarkets have been prepping you (not so subtly) for the big day since August, chances are your house is not yet decked for the spooky holiday. From “cute” to the “downright creepy,” if you are looking for a little All Hallows Eve inspiration this season, check out these fun facts and ideas to get those creative juices flowing and your little ghosts howling with glee.

History
Most people agree that Halloween started in Ireland as a pagan holiday honoring the dead. November 1st was the beginning of their new year, and on October 31, all the spirits of those who died that year would rise up and roam the night. The people would wear costumes and masks so that the spirits wouldn’t be able to pick out the mortals, and that way would not harm those still living. Jack-o-lanterns were originally made from turnips, and were set out, with little treats inside, as offerings to appease the spirits.
This eventually turned from a Druid holiday to a time of silly fun and parties that we know today. Halloween is second only to Christmas in spending; that’s a lot of candy and decorations!

Decorations
While decoration trends change from year to year, there are some classics that are must-haves, like pumpkins. While jack-o-lanterns may have started out as turnips, pumpkins soon took over the role of protecting us against the spirits roaming the world, and now no house looks complete without a few pumpkins in attendance. Whether carved into a scary face, or decorated with paints, ribbons, or lights, pumpkins are a Halloween staple.
If you want to keep with tradition, then all things ghosts, ghouls, and graveyards are also an essential to have. Tombstones, skeletons, spiders, bats, and monsters all fit into the mix. They can range from “cute” to “absolutely terrifying”, it’s up to you. A few ghosts and spiders will complete the ensemble, as will anything orange and black. Orange has come to symbolize the end of the harvest, while black brings in death, spirits, and ghouls.

Treats
Treats, along with your decorations, are an essential part of your Halloween experience. Cakes covered in spiders, cupcakes that look like witches, and cookies shaped like spiders or tombstones are always a great hit. You can go for a more spooky feel by serving any number of foods as bugs, worms, spiders or maggots, or as random body parts—eyeballs, fingers, toes, bones, or internal organs.
Whether you go for fun and cute or creepy and terrifying, Halloween is a great time for kids of all ages. Enjoy braving the one night of the year when spirits of the past roam our world!

5 Alternative Costume Ideas For Halloween!

Halloween is right around the corner once again and the one thing on everyone’s mind is what costume they should wear. Should you dress up as something that’s classically Halloween or go for something a little different? Well, if you really want to impress everyone you need to put a little imagination into your costume. Being a zombie or vampire for the one hundredth time just doesn’t drive fear into hearts anymore (especially now vampires are trendy).
Luckily there’s a solution to boring or clichéd Halloween costumes and it comes in the form of this handy list of alternative costume ideas. With these you should be the most original looking people whatever you do on the spookiest night of the year.

Walter White from Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad Characters Walter and Jesse
Cult TV show Breaking Bad is hugely popular right now as it reaches its dramatic finale so why not ride the wave of popularity by putting together a simple but cool Walter costume? The badass chemistry teacher who’s paying for his cancer treatment by cooking crystal meth has an iconic look that’s easy to recreate. Just don a yellow overall, red gas mask and add a pair of glasses and voila! And don’t forget the beard, you MUSN’T forget that epic beard!

Miley Cyrus/Robin Thicke

That famous performance on the MTV Awards scared the hell out of parents watching on TV – well come to think about it, it scared pretty much everybody. Therefore, if you really want to drive fear into prudes and people who fear weird dance routines, go out as either of these two! For guys all you need is a striped suit (think Beetlejuice) and girls you only need to find something slutty and peach coloured. Go out together and twerk in front of as many people as possible for full horrifying effect.

Finn/Fionna The Human from Adventure Time

Finn and Fionna
It’s adventure time! Or more like Halloween time! If you love the awesome cartoon then you’ll definitely want to dress as Finn or Fionna because their costumes are so easy to recreate. Depending on whether you’re a boy or girl you’ll need either a white beanie hat with bear ears or rabbit ears, a blue T Shirt, black shoes and then either a blue pair of shorts or skirt with knee high white socks for Fionna. To complete your costume you could even add the pair’s famous yellow sword or a little plush Jake or Cake. Your costume should be totally mathematical!

Mad Hatter from Alice In Wonderland

At Halloween time you certainly see a lot of slutty Alices, but you don’t often see very many Mad Hatter costumes. This is a great tragedy as he has an iconic look that’s perfect for Halloween costumes. So guys, you should fix this by customising your own mad hatter look. A good inspiration for your own costume could be Johnny Depp’s in the Tim Burton film adaptation, but make sure you have a top hat and some contact lenses to give you an insane look in the eyes to really make the costume work.

Daft Punk Robots

Daft Punk On Stage
Daft Punk well and truly returned this year with their first brand new (non-soundtrack before you say anything pedants) album in over 8 years. The French robots are well and truly back in mainstream consciousness and they still haven’t lost their cool look. This costume might require the most effort on this list but the results will more than speak for themselves. First get yourself a suave retro looking suit or leather jacket and then all that’s left is the iconic helmets. You can choose either Guy-Manuel or Thomas’ robotic helmets to copy and it may require either some patient searching for replicas online or making one yourself. Once complete you’ll be the coolest person at the party and you may even ‘get lucky’ (sorry).
With these alternative costumes you’re sure to impress, scare or make everyone laugh when doing your thing on Halloween. It may take a little money and effort to pull them off but it’ll be all worth it!

Guest Post: 5 Things To Do With a Pumpkin (That's Not Pumpkin Pie)

It’s Halloween in less than a month, and pumpkins are beginning to appear in supermarkets around the country. Now, if you’re a Halloween fan, then you’re probably already stocking up on the most charismatic of squashes, as well as tealights to turn them into some terrifying jack-o’-lanterns – and also making freezer space for the twenty pumpkin pies you’ll be baking.
But what if I told you that pumpkin pie and jack-o’-lanterns weren’t the only things you can make with your pumpkins? There are plenty of fun, creative and yummy tricks and treats you can create – and you can keep the kids out of trouble while they help you!
1. Make Some Yummy Toasted Pumpkin Seeds. Get your kids to help scoop out the insides of your pumpkin and separate the pumpkin seeds from the pulp, and then wash the seeds well. Drain, and bake in a low oven for about half an hour. You can add salt, spices and sugar if you like - why not try several different seasoning combinations to find everyone’s favourite?
2. Save Your Raw, Dried Pumpkin Seeds and Grow Your Own Pumpkins. The best time to plant pumpkins is after all risk of frosts has gone, so around May to June time. Get your little ones to find the sunniest spot in your garden and make sure you fertilise the area well – the bigger the area the better. Mound up the soil, and then push about five pumpkin seeds deep into the mound. Then make sure you take care of them by watering and weeding, and you should have some yummy pumpkins by next Halloween!
3. Make a Pumpkin Face Mask. Face masks may seem like a grown up thing, but pumpkins are full of great skin beneficial vitamins and minerals, and what child can resist covering their face with an orange goop? Roast and puree your pumpkin flesh, and then mix a cup of pumpkin puree with half a cup of brown sugar and a splash of milk. Plaster on, leave for up to 20 minutes, and then scrub off for beautiful clean skin.
4. Use It as a Self-Fertilising Planter. Fill your carved jack-o’-lantern with compost (pack it tight to stop it falling out of the carved areas, and then let the kids pick out a couple of their favourite perennial flowers from the garden centre. Plant them in the pumpkin, and then you can leave it out as a decoration for a few days, before putting it in the ground to degrade into some great plant food.
5. Add It to Soups, Stews and Sauces. Pumpkin dishes don’t necessarily have to be sweet! Pumpkin soup is super simple to make and a great quick winter warmer for after school on chilly days. Just boil chunks of pumpkin flesh with potato, stock and seasoning of your choice (cumin works well), blend and serve. Pumpkin also works really well in curries, stews, risottos, Mexican foods and with pasta.
Remember that Halloween treats are a great way to compliment reward systems in primary schools – try to work in a fun pumpkin-based activity as a reward when your little ones have been particularly good.
What’s your favourite way of using pumpkins?
