The Shamanic Detective

The Shamanic Detective

When Riga Hayworth’s lover is arrested, she’s determined to unearth the truth, no matter the cost. But life – and death – gets in the way. All Riga wants is to clear the name of her almost-fiancĂ©e, Donovan Mosse. But a death faerie has other plans for her, and Riga is forced to protect a shaman with a house full of murderous relatives. The only way to stop this killer is to figure out who he, or she, is before the next strike. As the two cases become entangled, Riga must choose between facts and faith, and decide just how far she’s willing to go for love. The Shamanic Detective is a paranormal mystery set in Lake Tahoe, and explores shamanism, the shadow, and the world of the fae.

Now based in San Mateo, CA, she writes the Riga Hayworth series of paranormal mysteries, blending her experiences and imagination to create a vivid world of magic and mayhem. Guest Post: Food Safety: Best Ways to Store Party Leftovers

Throwing parties can be a lot of fun, but they do require plenty of work on the part of the host or hostess. There are many things that need to be considered with regards to the food, knowing what to serve and how to serve it. This is crucial because food safety should play a key role. When entertaining, do think of how long certain foods will be sitting on a buffet table, and how long they will keep before spoiling. Then, once all is said and done, you will have to put leftovers away.

However, you will have to determine which foods are still good enough to store, and that means having a greater knowledge on food safety and its storage. Below, find tips on storing leftovers without any fear of food poisoning, as different products go beyond our daily bread.

1. Leftovers should not be kept longer than four days in the refrigerator, to begin with. Lengthier storage increases the risk of food poisoning because of bacteria that will grow. If foods have been in the fridge over four days, dispose of them. If you believe they will not be consumed within that time-frame, simply freeze them as soon as possible.

2. Storing foods after a party can only be done safely if they have not been sitting out at room temperature for over two hours. This is especially true of meat, poultry, eggs, fish, and dairy products. In warmer temperatures, these foods will not keep for more than one hour. Bacteria multiply quickly in average room temperature settings, so set out foods at the appropriate time and refrigerate them promptly after guests have eaten. This is true of sandwiches and cold salads, too.

3. Do not return any dips made with sour cream, or other dairy products in their original containers after they were placed on serving bowls, plates or pitchers. Instead, use plastic wrap and seal them tightly.

3. Leftover fruits, vegetables, and salads will not keep as long in the fridge. In fact, they may become moldy or wilted soon after.

4. All foods that are left over are best placed in airtight glass containers, which minimize the risk of bacteria from growing.

5. For stuffed turkey, remove the stuffing and chill both separately.

6. Canned sauces should be completely removed from the cans before refrigerating, or they will spoil quicker as well as leave a metallic taste.

Aid Your Pregnancy Journey With FertilAid

A few months ago I was given the opportunity to review a few different fertility products. The picture above is the package I received from Fairhaven Health. This review is long overdue. In my defense, this is a very difficult topic for me to discuss. I have a tendency to push things like this to the background. My apologies to all my readers as well as to Fairhaven Health for the delay.

Unfortunately, I still haven't been able to get pregnant so I can't say that taking any of the products above will help you. Fertility is a very, very complicated thing. It's very possible that I could have a different problem that these products can in no way help me.

Now that all that stuff is out of the way, on with the review :) The kit that Fairhaven Health sent to me contained a one month supply of FertilAid for Women, FertilDetox and FertilCM.  Plus it also include a SpermCheck test kit.

I took all the pills above as prescribed and I have to say I really felt great afterwards. I already take a multivitamin, but 1800 mgs of calcium each day, so to add something that actually made me feel even better was a surprise. I found that after about a week or so I had more energy than I did before. At the time I was also having other lingering issues from a previous medication and I believe that the FertilCM was able to help my body get back to normal.  These supplements range from $19.95 to $34.95 for a months supply.

Perhaps the most truly helpful item for us was the SpermCheck test. This test costs $39.95 and can be taken at home. The instructions are a bit involved so you'll want to make sure you read them over a few times before you take it. It cost us over $80 to have this test performed by our doctor. While this doesn't guarantee that you doctor won't want a test from the lab anyways, for people just starting out this can help. If you have any reason to believe that the problems you're having could be due to a low sperm count then I would recommend taking this test. I do want to add that on both tests my husband had excellent counts. The lab results were more precise, but I believe that's to be expected.

Here's a tip: Insurance doesn't always cover fertility treatments. However, if you take this test and it shows that your significant other has a low count then have him go to the doctor. Most insurance companies will cover his treatment by urologist.

Gotta Love Zebra Pens!!

Everyone needs office supplies whether they realize it or not. A great site that I have found to get my office supplies from is Shoplet.com. They have a huge selection of products to choose from. Whether you need to stock up the office, or get all the supplies you're kids will need for school, Shoplet.com can make it easy to find everything that you need.

Recently, I was given to opportunity to review a set of Zebra Pens courtesy of Shoplet. Zebra Pens was founded in 1982. Earlier this year they introduced the Z-Mulsion line. This is a unique of emulsion ink that is make from a combination of oil, water and pigment. The ink allows for an extremely smooth writing experience for users.

The package I received contained nine pens, a mechanical pencil and a highlighter. It was also in this very nice binder with lots of space to add more pens to my collection. They also included an adorable little stuffed Zebra with the package. If I still had my old office job he would've been put on display on my desk!

These pens are extremely comfortable to hold and are very easy to write with. Both my husband and I have taken one to work. We both work in fast food and are always looking for a pen. Anyone that has chance to use them always make the "wow, nice pen" comment. Since it's also different from your standard bic it's easy for me to remember to get it back whenever someone uses it. I've always loved a good pen and don't give them up easily.

Overall, I have to say that I was really impressed with this set of pens. They work great and don't cost a lot of money. I would recommend them to anyone that is looking for a good pen for work, or to get as a set for a gift. You won't be disappointed.

Unfortunately, at the time of this posting I'm having problems with my camera. So I can't get the pics of my Zebra Pens to upload. Once I've got the issue sorted I will update this post with the pictures. Including the very cute little stuffed Zebra.

Disclaimer: I received the above product at no cost in order to complete this review as part of the shoplet.com blogger program.  I did not receive any monetary compensation in exchange for this review. All opinions expressed are my own.

A Diary's House Book Excerpt

Check out this excerpt for A Diary's House and then add it to your reading list :) After you've read the excerpt make sure you enter to win an autographed copy of this great new book.

A Discovery Worth Discovering…

This vast room, with its circular windows and arched doorways, had both of its double fireplaces consumed in a roar and heaving fire; there within, sat a solitary figure. I felt the warmth of it nearly knock me back into the hallway, though I entered softly as not to disturb her so immediately. She was sitting in her long sofa; crossed about it as if in a half-sit and laying position. Her head was dropped and steady as if she were in full concentration. I could see an uneasy stare in her eyes and her face nearly crumbled from its own weight. The fires glowed upon her profile and cast the odd dances of a thousand shadows across her. A tear trickled from each eye like two slightly-dripping faucets that would never really shut off. The atmosphere was heavy and very stern. The silence pierced my hearing into a deaf pause; but for the occasional cracks and sparks of warm fire breathing from the fireplaces.
I sensed the dread of some shadow illuminating within which cut the room off from every other room in the home. A promiscuous ghost seemed to be present; some wreathing specter that was ready to intercede on us both, and it having knowledge on what was to occur and pass between us. I was hesitant and so reluctant to go any further. She made no motion to me or to recognize my presence, though she knew very well I was near her.
My heart pulsed into a steady and loud beat, and it nearly felt as though she could hear its’ every pulse. I couldn’t see directly what captivated her attention so. The back of this sofa obstructed my view. But whatever it was, nothing would have moved her to pause from it then. The moments in time were hard-stacked, and were crushing those before it; and it felt so heavy and weighted to the occasion that nothing before or in the future mattered, but for this single moment. The hard woods creaked as I moved slowly forward.
She did not come to a stir.
Still she made no further motion but to stare downward and drop her occasional tears to where she was looking on.
The heat from those fires made me perspire less than what the occasion seemed to carry in our lives. I could see the paintings on every wall appear to come into life with us. I stared about them and I saw the life of those shadows play in their frames. The rugs below grew into bright embers from the varying colors. And it seemed as though that this full spectrum made a rainbow in the room.
Still, she kept to her silence.
There was a presence there unlike any I had ever known before. It had its eyes peering upon our every move. The hands in the grandfather clock’s face looked to halt on its time; etching out the moment from its normal process. All was not well with sanity and nature there. There was a curb in the straight and narrow line of reality; a single bump in the road; a flash of lightening in the very midst of a clear day. I could feel the thunder of something build with uncertainty. Something was groping my sensibility; those laws of predictable nature somehow overturned into an uneasy, reckless sense.
I could not pardon the scenery for what it mistook. Nature had somehow bent itself into an angle; and an unwelcome eye was now observing us through that invisible camouflage. I felt it; sensed its every blink. There was a mind behind it; a thought. A lantern to ideas that now was watching the ‘playing-out’ on our scene.
Shelly remained as she was; still, silent; probing that unknown article embedded deep within this sofa. Not moving with even a flinch; a pause; a stutter.
She was motionless; placid; iced by some internal, frozen spell which kept her in its trance.
I moved closer; one step to a pause.
There was a pin in that silence.
Her heart beat out in her expression.
I watched; still, silent in my own momentary grave.
She moved; a page turned. She was reading her book. Surely she was finishing up Great Expectations. But her eyes; they told something different. Something real; something unearthed; something more raw than a drama placed in the boundaries of two covers. This was emotional; intimate; all too revealing.
Her eyes told me the tale of her thoughts.
 I moved closer even still.
I felt like a ghost intruding; fearing that I had no influence, but only to observe and watch the diadems in her expressions evolve and change with every cursing moment which passed.
Still, she did not move to recognize me.
I stepped almost within the smell of her fragrance.
Something was here; as I, watching and waiting.
Shelly was much more to the observant than I; and by far, more sensitive to what spirit within had a cause with us. I, even in my dullest and youthful senses, could feel the very marrow in its ancient soul.
I finally moved to front her; coming around the sofa, and so feeling the hot, melting warmth cross over the right side of my face.
 “Shelly?” I inquired…

Guest Post: 5 Ways To Remove Tough Stains From A Carpet

A light-colored carpet combined in a high-traffic home with rowdy kids, pets and busy schedules can be a recipe for disaster, often resulting in stains that seem impossible to remove. Whether it's red wine, mud, blood, grease or some other diabolical substance, your carpet can look like a Jackson Pollock painting at the end of the day. Although it might seem like a hopeless situation, you can remove these impossible stains quicker than ever using the following methods.

1. Blood
Whether your little one got a boo-boo or you cut yourself shaving and didn't notice, accidents happen and blood stains can often be the result. These deep stains aren't the kind you can quickly wipe up with a sponge, so listen up if you're in this predicament. Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidizer that can be used to deep-clean the stain and restore the look of your carpet. Because it can often have a bleaching effect, test it first on an inconspicuous area of your carpet.

2. Coffee
Who can get through the day without this basic fuel? It's probably not uncommon for you to be rushing around trying to get ready in the morning, with a cup of hot coffee in your hand. This scenario is exactly why it's probably not surprising that coffee stains will show up on your carpet. Although cleaning up these stains might make you five minutes late for work, it can help preserve the quality of your carpet. To start, spray the stain with detergent solution and blot with a dry cloth, then spray the area with a vinegar solution and blot dry again. Spray once more with detergent solution and follow up with a spray of lukewarm water, blotting after each application. Repeat these steps as many times as necessary.

3. Urine
If you've got furry friends in the home, urine stains can become your worst enemy. But this house-training woe doesn't have to get you down with a few simple cleaning steps. To remove urine stains, start by soaking up as much of the liquid as possible with paper towels. You can do this by folding several paper towels together and pressing firmly on the stain. Repeat until the stain has dried and pour cold water on top to re-saturate the area. Blot up the cold water and then spray a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water onto the stain. Let this sit for up to 15 minutes. Repeat until the stain is fully removed.

4. Grease
Remove all excess grease from the affected area and sprinkle with baking soda, cornstarch or another absorbent substance to soak up all residual grease. Let this sit for up to 15 minutes and then vacuum up the remainder. Apply a dry-cleaning solvent to a clean white cloth and sponge the stain until it has penetrated the carpet. Blot until the solvent is completely absorbed. If some of the stain still remains, use a solution of one tablespoon liquid dishwashing soap, one tablespoon of white vinegar and two cups of warm water. Blot to absorb the liquid, sponge with cold water and blot with a dry towel to fully remove the solution.

5. Lipstick
Although it might make you look better, lipstick can make your carpet look worse if an accidental fumble causes a deep stain. To remove this stain, simply dab the area with denatured alcohol and soak up the substance with a soft white cloth. Follow this treatment by applying a good detergent and letting it sit for 15 minutes. After this period, use cold water to rinse away the detergent and restore the carpet back to its original state.
These tips will certainly help with the bulk of serious stains. However, sometimes a stain can sit for too long or get too deep into the carpet fibers to clean out. In these instances, it might be best to opt for a professional carpet cleaning to restore your carpet and extend its life. By using coupons for this cleaning, this option can be both practical and affordable for having your carpet looking good as new.

About the Author

Hi! I’m Regina Duke. I’ve been writing for (gasp!) fifty years, collecting some lovely rejection slips along the way. When indie publishing became a possibility, I decided this was my opportunity to find out if people really enjoyed my books or not. What a wonderful way to share my stories! I wake up every morning, looking forward to writing the next one. And I am delighted by the responses from readers. When I’m not writing, I am teaching my dogs tricks and attending dog events in obedience, rally, and agility. Many of my books have dogs in them. Two Labrador pups wend their way onto the pages of The Wedding Wager. I also enjoy adding flowers to my garden, and this year I even produced some cherry tomatoes! I hope you’ll visit my website and blog, and if you like, follow me on Facebook and Twitter!

Bridge Club Book Blast!! Ends Oct. 23

The Bridge Club

How far would you go to help a close friend? Is there a place where you might draw the line and simply have to say no? The story = Eight women. Four decades of friendship. One unimaginable request. Where can you find a story about friendship, laughter and the good things in life that also touches on alcoholism, infidelity, porn addiction, illness and grief? For many women, it’s often within their own circle of friends. Whether your BFFs are in their twenties or are seniors, everyone has a story. The Bridge Club reminds us of the complexities of women’s friendships through an entertaining and often moving tale of eight women whose lives intersect once a month initially to play the game of bridge. What began as one night turns into four decades that span the segments of a woman’s journey from youthful optimism to embracing the challenges and opportunities presented in life’s later years. Based loosely on the author’s own bridge club, the story weaves the reader through a maze of life’s inevitable scenarios. This is a novel for anyone who values friendship. Not simply the “Hi, how are you?” type of friendship but rather the kind that weathers all sorts of storms, unselfishly celebrates triumphs, and hums along year after year with never an unkind word. It does exist. If you have such a friendship in your life you will relate to the women in The Bridge Club. If you don’t, perhaps the story will inspire you to search for it. Through laughter, tears, and everything in between the story meets life head on and affirms that building a strong foundation of friendship is a priceless asset.

Guest Post: Surrogacy Vs. Adoption - Weighing the Options

When it comes to having a child, I know I am making the biggest decisions I will ever make. That is why I want to do things right and weigh all of my options. Adoption and surrogacy are both choices that are viable for building my family. I just need to decide which of the two options is right for me. In adoption, we would assume the parental role for a child who has been genetically created by other people. We would not have biological connections to that child, but we would raise him or her as our own. In a surrogacy situation, another woman would carry our child, who may be able to have biological connections to us. Not all surrogacies work out that way, however, and biological connections can still vary. Either way, I would end up with a child who would legally be my own and that is the important bottom line. Here are some things I am considering in terms of differences between the two.

-Money
Adoption is usually more cost effective than surrogacy. Surrogacy can be tens of thousands of dollars while most adoptions cost half or even less of a surrogacy process. With an adoption, I would only have to pay for the court expenses and a few other things. With a surrogate, I would have to pay health fees, administrative fees and a number of other items.

-Legalities
Surrogacy has a lot of complicated laws attached to it and those laws vary from state to state. Adoption has a variety of laws as well, but since more people go through the process, they are more set in stone.

 -Options
While I would get to choose a surrogate, I would not have too many other choices in that process. With adoption, I could choose not only from where to adopt a child, but what age range I think I would enjoy. I could choose to adopt a child from another country as well. I also get to think about things like the relationship the child might have with his or her biological parents. I could choose to have no contact at all or I might want to have a more open visitation between the families. Since I know that having a child is one of the most important aspects of my family's future, I want to make the right decisions. All of these options are valid and my ultimate decision will depend on the direction my opinion falls on each issue.
